BikeSummer! 2007 FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)
| Who came up with the idea? | Back in 1999, several activists affiliated with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, organizing as a self-described "Ad-Hoc Committee on Governmental Insurrection," floated the idea for a "Bike Summer." The idea quickly circulated in cyberspace and elsewhere, attracting a number of other activists who have been meeting to develop the concept. In the mode of the 1960s "Freedom Summer" or "Summer of Love," Bike Summer would attempt to shift the balance of forces regarding transportation policy in San Francisco, "ground zero" of the global fight for sustainable cities. |
| Who do I contact about...? |
Please do not contact event organizers and others from previous years' listings. Contact information has been kept for historical purposes only. Thank you. The 2007 ad-hoc committee can
be reached at: However, please go easy on us. As has always been the case, local BikeSummer! organizers are free to use the web pages and ideas already developed here, to roll their own local events, 'zines, and web sites: there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Unless otherwise noted, all BikeSummer! web pages, text, and images are copyleft. |
| Why is BikeSummer! happening only in Summer? | It doesn't have to: BikeSummer! is up to
you. Every previous BikeSummer! host city and event sponsor has been free
to create their own celebration of cycling, reflecting its own local culture
and uniqueness.
If the momentum builds and the mixed metaphor spills out into the future, then the velorution has come to fruition. We hope this will be the case. |
| But summer is so close. There isn't time to organize. |
Nonsense! BikeSummer! organizes itself from the bottom up. The BikeSummer! 1999 ad-hoc committee sat back, and enabled the entire San Francisco Bay Area bicycle scene to pull off an entire month of events in less than 5 months. The simple, intuitive framework empowers individuals, groups, and organizations to unite, and bring communities together, rather than scramble about from stingy corporate sponsors hoping for a few crumb$ to pay for your event. Be creative and use your imagination; think outside the box, and inspire others to new possibilities! |
| Where did the phrase "The Revolution Will Not Be Motorized" come from? |
It is a play-on-words from Gil Scott-Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Someone modified the lyrics to read "The Revolution Will Not Be Motorized." |
